Most visitors drive from Effingham, 25 miles northwest via Routes 33 and 50, which connects to Interstate 57. The town sits in rolling prairie country typical of central Illinois, surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Its historic one-room schoolhouse, a red brick building that operated for over a century, still stands as a reminder of rural education's past.
