Woonsocket is a small farming town of about 760 people in east-central South Dakota, serving as Sanborn County's seat. Located along US Highway 34, it's about 60 miles northwest of Mitchell via US 83 north. The town sits in the James River valley amid corn and soybean country. Its 1904 Carnegie Library, with distinctive red brick and classical columns, remains one of South Dakota's few still-operating Carnegie-funded libraries.
