Woonsocket is a former mill city of 43,500 people in northern Rhode Island, right on the Massachusetts border. Route 146 connects it directly to Providence 20 miles south, while I-495 runs along the eastern edge for longer trips. The compact downtown sits in a valley along the Blackstone River, where converted textile mills now house apartments and businesses. The restored Blackstone River Theatre downtown still hosts concerts and shows in its original 1920s vaudeville house.
