Wood River is an industrial city along the Mississippi River, about 20 minutes northeast of St. Louis via Interstate 270. Highway 111 runs through town connecting to Alton and other river communities, while Highway 143 links to nearby suburbs. The city developed around heavy industry, particularly oil refining along the riverfront. Wood River houses one of the Midwest's largest oil refineries, the Phillips 66 facility that processes over 300,000 barrels daily since 1917.
