Wise sits in Virginia's coal country near the Kentucky border, serving as county seat and home to UVA's College at Wise. US Route 23 runs north-south through town, connecting to Norton (15 miles south) and continuing toward Kentucky. Route 68 heads east to Big Stone Gap, while Route 78 goes west into Kentucky's mining region. Lonesome Pine Airport just outside town is one of the few airports serving this remote mountain corner of Virginia.
