Winkelman is a small mining town along State Route 77 in southeastern Arizona, about 90 miles from Phoenix and 60 miles from Tucson. The main route from Phoenix goes through Superior and Globe, while the Tucson route passes through Oracle. Most traffic consists of mining workers and travelers using SR-77 as a scenic alternative between the two metro areas. The town sits right next to the Ray Mine, one of Arizona's largest open-pit copper operations.
