Winfield is a small Alabama city of about 5,000 people in Marion County, surrounded by the Bankhead National Forest. Take US 278 for the main east-west route, or State Route 129 to reach I-22 about 30 miles south near Jasper. From there, it's 70 miles to Birmingham or 150 miles to Memphis. The annual Mule Day festival in September celebrates the area's Appalachian heritage with traditional music and crafts.
