Willow River is a small Pine County town of 342 people, about 90 miles north of Minneapolis via I-35 and Highway 23. The most common route takes I-35 north to Hinckley, then Highway 23 west for 15 miles. From Duluth, it's a 45-mile drive southwest on Highway 23 through farming country. The town's 1899 wooden grain elevator still towers over the community as one of Pine County's last original structures.
