White River is a small county seat in south-central South Dakota with about 600 residents. US Highway 83 runs right through town, connecting north to I-90 near Murdo (45 miles) and providing the main route from Rapid City or Sioux Falls. State Highway 44 intersects here, running east to Winner and west to Scenic. The town features one of South Dakota's few remaining original Carnegie libraries from 1916.
