White Mountain is a remote Inupiat village of 220 people on Alaska's Seward Peninsula, about 60 miles southeast of Nome. No roads reach the community - visitors fly into White Mountain Airport or travel by seasonal ice roads and boat routes. The village sits along the Fish River in subarctic tundra country with brutal winters and brief summers. White Mountain serves as a mandatory checkpoint on the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
