White Bird is a tiny community of 57 people in north-central Idaho, positioned along the dramatic White Bird Hill grade on US Highway 95. The highway drops over 2,000 feet in seven miles through this narrow Salmon River canyon. Most visitors arrive via US 95 from Lewiston (35 miles south) or Grangeville (40 miles north). The area features the White Bird Battlefield, site of the opening battle of the 1877 Nez Perce War.
