Wharton lies about 60 miles southwest of Houston along US 59, serving as Wharton County's seat in the fertile Colorado River valley. US 59 provides the main connection to Houston, while State Highway 60 runs east-west to Bay City and the coast. The 1888 red brick courthouse with its prominent clock tower has been the town's centerpiece for over 130 years.
