Wathena sits four miles from the Missouri border in northeastern Kansas, home to about 1,500 residents in Doniphan County. US Highway 36 runs right through town, making it a 12-mile straight shot east to St. Joseph, Missouri, and connecting west to larger Kansas cities. Most visitors arrive via Interstate 29 in Missouri before taking Highway 36 west. The town's historic downtown features several 1880s buildings from the railroad era, including the old Wathena State Bank with its original pressed tin ceiling.
