Watauga is a small East Tennessee community of 644 people in Carter County, reached via US Route 321 from Elizabethton (15 minutes south) or Mountain City (north toward Virginia). State Route 67 provides east-west access, while I-26 lies 20 miles southeast for longer trips to Johnson City and the Tri-Cities region. The volunteer fire department operates from a red brick station on US 321, where a traditional fire bell still rings during emergency calls.
