Vernonia is a small logging town in Oregon's Coast Range foothills, about 50 miles northwest of Portland via Highway 47. The scenic drive takes 90 minutes through forested hills and farmland, with Highway 202 providing an alternate route from the coast. The town of 2,800 sits in a valley along the Nehalem River, surrounded by dense Douglas fir forests. Vernonia anchors the popular Banks-Vernonia State Trail, a 21-mile rail-to-trail that follows an old logging railroad through the countryside.
