Vandenberg Air Force Base sits on California's central coast about 55 miles northwest of Santa Barbara. Most visitors take US-101 to Highway 1 west through Lompoc, while locals use Surf Beach Road. The base spans rolling coastal hills where the Pacific moderates year-round temperatures. It's one of the few places in America where rockets launch directly over the ocean into polar orbits.
