Van Buren is a small Ozarks town along the Current River, about 140 miles from St. Louis via I-44 and Highway 60. Most visitors come from Springfield (80 miles west) or Poplar Bluff (45 miles southeast) on Highway 60, the main east-west route through town. It's the jumping-off point for float trips on the Current and Jacks Fork rivers, with several outfitters renting canoes and kayaks. The 1890s courthouse on the town square is built from local stone and features rare Second Empire architecture.
