Valdese, a small foothills city of 4,700, sits along Interstate 40 about an hour northwest of Charlotte. Founded by Italian Waldensian immigrants in 1893, the town preserves its Alpine heritage through annual festivals and the historic Waldensian Presbyterian Church, which still conducts some services in Italian.
