Upton is a small ranching town in northeastern Wyoming where US Highway 16 meets State Highway 116. Most visitors pass through on US 16 while traveling between Rapid City and the Black Hills (75 miles east) or Newcastle and Devils Tower (20 miles west). The town sits at 4,100 feet elevation in rolling grassland dotted with wheat fields and cattle ranches. Its massive concrete grain elevator towers over the prairie, visible for miles in every direction.
