Turkey is a tiny Sampson County community along US Highway 421, about 15 miles south of Clinton and 60 miles from Wilmington. The area sits in North Carolina's coastal plain with flat farmland and experiences typical southeastern humidity. Most traffic uses US 421 to connect with Interstate 40 near Clinton for longer trips, while locals make short runs to Clinton for services. The community takes its name from Turkey Creek, where early settlers found wild turkeys plentiful along the waterway.
