Tulia, the Swisher County seat, sits 45 miles south of Amarillo on US Highway 87 in the Texas Panhandle. This farming community of 4,400 residents serves the surrounding cotton and cattle country on the High Plains. State Highway 86 intersects US 87 downtown, connecting east and west across the region. The city gained national attention for a controversial 1990s drug case that wrongfully convicted 46 residents.
