Tolstoy is a tiny farming town of 57 people in north-central South Dakota's Potter County. Reach it via US Highway 83, about 90 miles north of Pierre or 60 miles south of Interstate 94 near Bismarck. State Highway 20 provides east-west access to Gettysburg and Mobridge. The town was named after Russian author Leo Tolstoy, honoring the German-Russian immigrants who settled this prairie community in the early 1900s.
