Thornton is a small Cook County community about 30 miles south of Chicago, accessible via Interstate 94. The village sits near the Indiana border with easy connections to Gary and Hammond. State Route 1 (Dixie Highway) runs north-south through town as the main local road. Most traffic comes from Chicago via I-94 or from Indiana cities. The original 1907 railroad depot still stands downtown.
