Tatum is a small East Texas town of about 1,400 people, surrounded by pine forests about 20 miles southwest of Marshall. State Highway 43 runs through town north-south, while FM 2208 connects east-west to US 259 and Interstate 20. The area's red clay soil and humid climate support dense timber growth. The 1906 red brick Rusk County Bank building still stands as the town's architectural centerpiece on Main Street.
