Tappahannock is a small riverside town about 50 miles northeast of Richmond, sitting where US-17 and US-360 meet along the Rappahannock River. Most visitors arrive via US-360 from Richmond or US-301 from Northern Virginia. The town serves as Essex County's seat and features a historic 1848 courthouse with a distinctive clock tower that's been keeping time over the river for more than 170 years.
