Taconite is a small Iron Range community of 468 people in north-central Minnesota, about 15 miles southwest of Grand Rapids via Highway 169. The town sits amid the forested lake country typical of this region, accessible from longer distances via Highway 2 from the Twin Cities (180 miles) or Duluth (80 miles). Named after the iron-bearing rock that defined Minnesota's mining heritage, Taconite remains a quiet residential community rather than an active mining center.
