Sylva serves as Jackson County's seat in North Carolina's western mountains, about 45 miles southwest of Asheville via US Highway 23. The town sits in a valley at 2,000 feet elevation, where the Tuckasegee River winds through Appalachian foothills. Most visitors drive US 23 from Asheville or approach from Charlotte via I-85 to US 74. The 1914 courthouse downtown features a distinctive clock tower with white columns that's been keeping mountain time for over a century.
