Sutton-Alpine is a small Matanuska Valley community about 50 miles northeast of Anchorage via the Glenn Highway. The hour-plus drive passes through Palmer and rural farmland before reaching this settlement of 1,600 residents near the Chugach foothills. Palmer Municipal Airport sits 25 miles southwest. The town's name honors the historic Sutton coal mine that fueled Alaska Railroad steam engines from 1918 to 1922.
