Susanville serves as Lassen County's seat in California's remote northeast corner, sitting at 4,186 feet elevation amid pine forests and high desert. Highway 36 runs east-west through town, connecting to Red Bluff and the Sacramento Valley westward, while Highway 139 provides the north-south route to Alturas. Most visitors arrive via Highway 36 from Sacramento (three hours) or from Reno through the Sierra Nevada. The California Correctional Center employs nearly half the local workforce.
