Surprise is a tiny farming community of 35 people in Butler County, about 60 miles west of Omaha via US-92 and county roads. Most visitors arrive from David City, 15 miles southeast, or connect from US-81 to the east. The settlement sits amid rolling cornfields and pastureland typical of central Nebraska's agricultural heartland. Early settlers named it Surprise after being genuinely surprised to find such good farmland and water in this particular prairie location.
