Sunset Beach is a quiet barrier island town in southeastern North Carolina, reached by a single causeway off NC Highway 179. Most visitors drive US Highway 17 along the coast, either 45 miles south from Wilmington or 30 minutes north from Myrtle Beach. The island features wide Atlantic beaches and salt marshes, with a subtropical climate that's mild in winter and warm in summer. The famous "Kindred Spirit Mailbox" sits in the dunes where strangers leave letters for others to find.
