Sumter sits 45 miles east of Columbia and 100 miles northwest of Charleston in South Carolina's farm country. I-95 passes just east of town, with US 378 connecting to Columbia and US 521 running toward Charlotte. Shaw Air Force Base on the southeast side generates military traffic. The 1893 Sumter Opera House downtown remains one of South Carolina's oldest continuously operating theaters.
