Stonefort is a small farming community in southern Illinois with 422 residents, reached via Route 13 from Interstate 57 near Marion (25 miles west) or from Harrisburg to the east. Route 145 also passes through town north-south. The rolling agricultural landscape is typical of Saline County's farm country between the major river valleys. The town was named after a stone fort built by early settlers for protection.
