Steward is a farming town of 271 people in Lee County, about 90 miles west of Chicago. Take I-88 west to Rochelle, then Route 251 north for 8 miles through corn and soybean country. From Rockford, it's 45 minutes via US 20 east to Route 251 south. The town's working grain elevator still dominates the skyline along the old railroad tracks.
