Staunton is a farming town of 350 people in Clay County, reached via State Road 42 about 15 miles west of Brazil. Most traffic uses SR-42 for local trips to Brazil or longer routes connecting Terre Haute to points east toward Indianapolis. Terre Haute Regional Airport is 25 miles northwest. The town's grain elevator stands as a prominent landmark visible across the surrounding farmland.
