Staunton is a small farming community along Interstate 55, about 45 miles northeast of St. Louis and 30 miles south of Springfield. Most visitors pass through on I-55, one of the Midwest's major north-south routes connecting Chicago to St. Louis. The town serves as a convenient highway stop with gas stations and basic services. Its historic downtown centers on the restored 1884 Macoupin County Courthouse, a striking Second Empire building that still functions as an active courthouse today.
