Stanton, the Powell County seat, sits in Kentucky's Appalachian foothills about 45 miles southeast of Lexington via the scenic Mountain Parkway. US-460 and KY-15 form the main crossroads through town, with the Mountain Parkway providing the primary access route from the Bluegrass region. The 1908 courthouse anchoring the town square was built from locally quarried sandstone.
