Stamping Ground is a small Kentucky city of about 1,000 people located 20 miles northeast of Frankfort via US Route 227. Most visitors arrive from Lexington (25 miles southeast via US 60 and US 227) or Louisville (45 miles via I-64 and US 227). The town sits in Scott County's rolling bluegrass region and got its distinctive name from a historic buffalo salt lick where wildlife stamped the ground bare while gathering to lick natural salt deposits.
