St. Peter is a tiny farming town in central Illinois with about 340 residents, surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Most visitors arrive via Illinois Route 185 from Vandalia, about 15 miles south on US Route 51. The town sits in classic Midwest prairie country with hot, humid summers and cold winters. The working grain elevator, over a century old, towers above the flat landscape and can be spotted from miles away.
