St. Maries is a small timber town in Idaho's Panhandle, about 40 miles southeast of Coeur d'Alene via US Highway 3. The town sits along the St. Joe River and serves as the gateway to St. Joe National Forest. Highway 3 connects north to I-90, while Highway 5 heads east toward Montana. The main street is completely canopied by towering trees, creating a natural tunnel effect that locals claim makes it the shadiest town in America.
