St. Francis is a small community of 593 people in south-central South Dakota, serving as Todd County's seat on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. US Highway 83 runs north-south through town, connecting to Mission 15 miles south and Pierre to the north, while Highway 18 provides east-west access to Winner and Nebraska. The town houses St. Francis Indian School, a Catholic boarding institution serving Native American students since 1886.
