St. Charles lies in southeastern Minnesota's bluff country, 20 miles northwest of Winona via Highway 14. Most visitors arrive on Highway 14 from Rochester to the west or continue from the Twin Cities via I-35 south to Highway 14 east. The city serves as a gateway to Whitewater State Park, home to Minnesota's original 1856 hand-hewn log lodge.
