Springfield sits in Missouri's Ozark hills, connected by Interstate 44 east-west to St. Louis and Tulsa, and US 65 north-south toward Kansas City and Branson. Popular routes include the 40-mile drive south to Branson's shows and the northeast connection to St. Louis. Springfield-Branson Airport is 6 miles northwest of downtown. The city is the birthplace of Route 66, originating from a 1926 meeting at the Colonial Hotel.
