Spencer is a tiny high desert community of under 20 people along I-15, about 50 miles north of Idaho Falls. Most visitors are passing through on the interstate or heading to the nearby Spencer Opal Mine, where you can actually dig for fire opals in volcanic rock. It's one of the few places in North America where tourists can hunt for these precious stones.
