Speed is a tiny rural community in eastern North Carolina with just 64 residents, located about 60 miles northeast of Raleigh. Take US-64 East to Rocky Mount, then NC-4 north through tobacco country to reach this quiet crossroads settlement. The community got its name from the Speed family who settled here in the 1800s, and still centers around the historic Speed Crossroads where two country roads meet under ancient oak trees.
