Speculator is a small Adirondack village of 400 people in Hamilton County, sitting at 1,700 feet elevation among pristine lakes and forests. The main route is NY-30 north-south through town, intersecting with NY-8 east-west at the village center. It's about an hour from Albany via Route 29 west to Route 30 north, or accessible from I-87 exits connecting to Route 30. The annual August Fun Days festival features a quirky cardboard boat race on Lake Pleasant.
