Sparta, a small southern Illinois city of 4,000, sits about an hour southeast of St. Louis via I-64 and Route 4. The county seat of Randolph County lies in rolling hills between the Mississippi valley and Illinois prairie. Route 4 runs through downtown, connecting north to I-64 and south toward Chester. Route 154 provides east-west access across the region. The local airport northeast of town still displays vintage military aircraft from its WWII training days.
