Sonoma lies in California's wine country, about 45 miles north of San Francisco via US-101 to Highway 37 west, then Highway 121 north. The drive takes roughly an hour through scenic marshlands and vineyards. Highway 12 connects Sonoma to Santa Rosa and continues east toward Napa, making it popular for wine tours. The Mediterranean climate supports year-round grape growing and outdoor activities. The town square, laid out in 1835, remains California's largest.
