Smithville is a small Texas city about 40 miles southeast of Austin along Highway 71. The Colorado River town of 4,200 people sits where Hill Country meets coastal plains. Highway 71 provides direct access from Austin in 45 minutes, while Highway 95 connects north to Bastrop. The downtown served as the filming location for Sandra Bullock's 1998 movie "Hope Floats."
