Smithton is a small Illinois city about 25 miles east of St. Louis, reached via I-64 east to Exit 23, then north on Route 4. The town sits in prairie country with around 3,700 residents and stays busy with commuters to Scott Air Force Base and MidAmerica Airport just 10 miles away. It's home to Illinois' oldest continuously operating volunteer fire department, founded in 1882.
